Word From The Mouth: Studs and Duds!
Another season is underway and I’ve had a few people talk to me about a few things. For example why haven’t I mentioned them or why do I always pick on them. While it’s very simple to answer these types of questions, I try to write about only the games that I see so I have a firsthand view of what really transpired and who played well. I also don’t like always talking about the same players cause how many times can I say that this person was the best player on the field? You need to show me something worthwhile or I might not talk about it. As for talking trash about someone, well its fun, I can, and how else am I going to keep winning the smack talk award. This is football if you can’t handle the trash talking I’ll bring you some pom poms and you can be the leagues one and only cheerleader.
Game Recap: Revolucion vs Gros Coqs
This game wasn’t close. Yes, it did end in a 16 point win for Les Gros Coqs, but I felt that in the second half that they were just playing around. I will say that adding Ben Lawlor will really help La Revolucion out. He likes to go long a lot and he has the arm strength to do it and it also helps that he has guys like JC and Ted who can go up and get the ball. He just needs to learn when to take his shots down field. That was his problem in last fall’s finals and it looks to be the same at the start of this season. Once Raph comes back their offense will have a third speedster on the roster. Or at least in his old delusional mind he is a speedster (only a step behind Josh) (Ed’s note: still about 20 steps ahead of you, though we can’t be sure of the exact number since someone keeps chickening out…). I want to say that the kids even losing a guy or two still look very strong and should compete for the title again this season. The offense look great and it’s nice to see Bresse who I think is one of the top five players in the division get involved. On defense they managed four picks, but no sacks. Tommy will need to do better than that if he plans on leading the league again and possibly winning defensive player of the year which I think he should have gotten last season (Ed’s note: Agreed. No offense, Ben!). Now this brings me to another point people want me to talk about them and then they show up late. You need to show up on time and play and not drop a pick or a reception, you know who I am talking about. How you planning on winning defensive player of the year like that. My favorite play from this game wasn’t a huge play, but it did make someone look a little foolish. It was a run by Tommy where he put a move on Gabe so hard that he was on the ground, it was great. Revolucion will need to figure out how to play defense if they want to make it to the playoffs, I will say this every week until they figure it out.
Game of the Week: Revolucion vs Deep Threats
This one is a game of who can go deep more often (Ed’s note: and more accurately), my bet would be on Deep Threats. I think Ben knows how to work the field a little bit better, but you never know. I also think this game can be a turnover nightmare since both teams tend to just chuck it up. To whoever is reffing and scorekeeping, it might be a long one. So now I figured I’ll break it down by position and tell you what I think.
QB - So this one isn’t too tricky for me. You have JC and you have Ben. JC could be a very good QB at times, but he still doesn’t realize that he needs to work the whole field short and deep. Do that for a full game and see where you end up. You will cut down on the of picks you throw plus you will control the clock. Ben on the other hand knows what to do and where to go with the ball. He is by far the more experienced of the two and it will come to show it this game. I am give the advantage to Revolucion in this department.
WR - So, here you have two teams with two totally different strategies. You have Deep Threats who force a lot of balls towards Jon who is a great deep ball guy and will out jump most guys to get it, but after that they are lacking another guy or two. Who will make plays consistently when targeted? Once someone steps up it will take some coverage away from Jon and make it easier on JC to hit him on deep balls. Revolucion has an abundance of guys who are able to get the ball and make plays. You have JC who was last seasons WR of the year, but you also have Ted, David, Gabe, and how could you forget a guy like Raph. This is a very experienced bunch who can and will get the job done more often than not. I have to go with Revolucion in this category because they have more than one guy who can step up.
Defense - So I have said this in the past and I’ll say it again: your offense will only get you so far and you need to get a stop or two to win. Both of these teams seem to have weak defenses. Revolucion are all over the place trying to double rush and trying to shift all over the place but they don’t have the right guys to do it. My suggestion is play one or two defenses and master them so everyone knows what they are doing and where they need to be first before trying all of that other stuff. Now for Deep Threats they are a little younger and can get to where they need to be a little faster so it helps them out. With Jon playing the deep safety he covers a lot of ground Francis and Stu normally eat up guys going short and across the field. But again don’t try and do more than you guys are capable of. I’m not really sure who actually has the better defense but after watching Revolucion last week being all over the place I have to give the advantage to Deep Threats.
Predictions
This is the fun part where I get to show off my superior knowledge of the teams and get to see how right I am at picking the winners. So far this season I’m at 100%, doubt I’ll keep it like that all season but it be great if I did.
Revolucion vs Deep Threats Revolucion
Gros Coqs vs Revolucion Gros Coqs
Outlaws vs Trollers NA (Ed’s note: Trollers)
Power Rankings
I know that only one week has been played, but it wasn’t too hard to figure it out. So here we are with the power rankings.
#1- Gros Coqs (1-0)
#2- Outlaws (1-0)
#3- Trollers (0-0)
So that is how the rankings will start but will they finish this way. We will know that in nine more weeks.
Stud and Dud
This is a new section where I will be naming a player who played great and had the numbers to back it up. You can do it on offense, on defense or even on both but you need to ball out. I will also be naming a dud this is someone who I feel underperformed and didn’t show up to play. So this is totally up to you and if you don’t like it since you were the dud play better and maybe it won’t happen again, but you never know.
Stud of the week goes to Bresse who had a very solid game with 3 catches for 55 yards 2 TDs and two 1 point converts to go along with 2 tackles and 1 pick. I had a few other guys in consideration for stud of the week, but I had to go with Bresse this week better luck next week everyone else.
Dud of the week goes to Stu. Yes he made 2 tackles, but after I wrote about you and your tackling abilities and you only get 2 it’s a little disappointing. Sorry Stu, you’re the dud this week.
That is it for this week but we still have a long way to go. I hope that everyone gets a chance to make it onto the Stud of the week. I was nice this week but moving forward I’m going to be talking more smack about you if you end up as the dud. I was really hoping the dud was going to be Francis, but he played well. Too bad, maybe next week. Thanks for reading and I hope you enjoyed.
