Week 5 of this winter season sees all 3 matchups being cross divisional for the one and only time this season, so everyone will be meeting their opponent for the first time.

 

The Chèvres have already secured a spot in the playoffs, but they can lock up first place in their division with a win against the G.O.A.T.S. who are slightly more in need of a win to keep their second place position.  With both squads wanting this one, it should be a great match to open up the day on Saturday!

 

At 7:20 the Amish Cyborgs visit the Sooners 45 where both teams are desperate for a win to fight for a playoff spot.  The Amish Cyborgs are coming off their first win of the season last week and are looking to continue the trend and run the table to get themselves a seat at the table on March 25th.  The Sooners currently sit in a playoff position holding the head to head tie breaker with the Huskies, but they are anything but secure and want the win as much as the ‘Borgs.

 

The day finishes off with the Huskies and Krakens squaring off.  The Huskies should have top rated QB Raphael Levy back and they look to steal one from the Krakens, who are certainly looking to bounce back after their first loss of the season in their previous game and definitely want to avoid dropping two in a row.

 

Things could go a lot of ways after Saturday, but whatever happens the playoff picture will likely be a lot clearer!

Going into the bye week there are no more winless teams and everyone still has a shot at the playoffs!

 

Saturday's first game saw the Chèvres take down the Huskies who put up a great fight despite missing their new QB for the game.  It was a 13-6 defensive struggle until late in the game when 6 touchdowns were scored in the last 3 minutes of the match, including 2 pick sixes from Alexandre Bresse of the Chèvres!  It was a tie game with 20 seconds left when Vincent Granata found Eddy-blay Tchoffo fote for a 3 yard score to take the late lead, with Catherine Boucher ending things with a safety to put things out of reach.

 

The Sooners 45 trick play offense continued to serve them well, taking the strong G.O.A.T.S. team into the half down only 13-12.  Unfortunately for them, despite a strong 4 TD pass showing from Jose Luis Castro Sr, they couldn't overcome the 6 interceptions thrown between the Castro family at QB which allowed their opponent to open up a 21 point lead, with a huge contribution from Shyanne Stewart who averaged 20 yards a catch and ended up with 2 TD receptions and a 1 point conversion.  Despite a strong finish by the Sooners who added 2 touchdowns in the last 3 minutes, they had just let things slip too far out of reach to make the comeback and get the win.

 

The Krakens came into their match up with the winless Amish Cyborgs seeming close to undefeatable with a 3-0 record and never looking in any real danger through their opening games.  The 'Borgs came out like a team possessed though, and managed to quiet the powerhouse offense of the Squid Squad while offensively QB Jon Evans threw 5 TD passes and the Cyborgs converted on 3 of them, surpassing their conversion total for the season in a single game.  Kevin Kousaie turned multiple short throws into big gains (including a 45 yard TD pass that was about 40 yards of YAC), earning him player of the week for his performance.

 

There are no games this weekend, but the MFL is back in action on February 18th with everything to play for!

We’re nearing the half way point of the season and the Krakens and Chèvres remain undefeated and look poised to take the top spots of their respective divisions.

 

The G.O.A.T.S. put up a much stronger showing this week, but the Krakens managed to get the win and sweep the season series 2-0, giving them a very strong position in the playoff picture. The turning point of the match was a late interception by Kenneth Boudreau with the G.O.A.T.S. on the door step for the game tying score, which swung the momentum heavily in the favour of the Krakens.

 

The Huskies picked up their first win of the season with new QB Raphael Levy at the helm, leaving the Amish Cyborgs as the only winless team in the league.  The Huskies kicked things off with a 45 yard TD pass from Levy to Ryan Belam which seemed to put the Cyborgs on the back foot for the rest of the match.  Belam capped things off with a hard run 6 yard TD reception to end any hope of a Cyborgs comeback.

 

The final match of the night had the Chèvres looking strong from the outset of their match against the Sooners 45, putting up 25 unanswered points before the 5 minute mark of the second half.  The Sooners did make a game of it though, with future star Jose Luis Castro Jr showing his acceleration and speed to score a 7 yard rushing TD to break the shut out and ending the game with a 9 yard TD reception which say him slicing through three defenders for the score.

 

Every game this week was a close one as we see new teams and players learning the ropes and starting to come together to compete with the returning veteran squads.  If this continues, the second half of the season should see a lot of thrillers!

This Saturday the Krakens look to stay undefeated this week while the G.O.A.T.S. want revenge from their last meeting when the Krakens seemed locked in from the first snap and who have looked untouchable in their first two games.

 

In the second match up of the night it’s the battle of the no-wins with the Amish Cyborgs taking on the Huskies.  The Huskies have a new player with perennial top QB Raphael Levy taking over the offense, so it should be a much different squad this week.  Both of these teams are desperate for a win, so it should be a good one!

 

The final game of the day has the Sooners 45 visiting the Chèvres.  The Chèvres are undefeated and have looked very strong in both of their games, but the 45 are coming off a big win against the Huskies and we’ll get to see how their trick play offense works this week against a different opponent, so it should be an exciting match up!

Week 1 of the MFL's first winter season is in the books and there's already lots to talk about!

 

The first game of the day ended with a goal line stand made by the G.O.A.T.S. against the Amish Cyborgs with the now infamous "last play heard around the world" perhaps ending the game one play early.  Despite the finish, the 18-13 game was an excellent match and a hard fought defensive battle between two newly established rivals.

 

Stephen Persaud ended the game with 3 TD passes which was good enough for the win, and on the other side Max Rosenfeld came down with 9 receptions including 2 touchdown grabs.

 

The matchup between the Chèvres and the Huskies saw the young but skilled Chèvres using their experience to take down the Huskies in a 54-12 victory.

 

Huskies QB Jason Watt showed signs of promise throwing a good ball and with experience will likely be a solid passer, but too often threw balls up into safeties hands.  Still, expect to see a much improved Huskies squad in weeks to come.

 

For the Chèvres, an outstanding offensive performance was led by team quarterback Vincent Granata throwing 5 TD passes and spreading the ball around very effectively.  Defensively the Chèvres had a massive no fly zone on any deep balls, with Alexandre Bresse and Pascal Nkengue combining for 6 interceptions and 3 pick sixes.

 

The only downside for the Chèvres was the injury to star defensive player Etienne Moisan, who we’re hoping will be back in action soon.

 

The final game of the day showed the experience of the Krakens take down the new Sooners 45 squad, 50-6.  While the Sooners clearly have some talent on the roster, it may take some time for their knowledge of the game to start letting that talent shine.

 

The Krakens were led by QB Rob Prudhomme with a league leading 6 touchdown passes and defensively Silvio Ciarriocchi had 3 interceptions including one returned for a score.

 

The Sooners showed some skill defensively with corner Vladimir Perea being a beast in the short game with 4 passes defensed and on offense Jose Luis Castro had 4 receptions for 74 yards and a TD.  Despite the loss, I’m sure we’ll see a massive improvement for this squad over the course of the season.
